Karen Phillips
I started out by taking a photography class in high school and fell in love with it. Since then, I have gone on to take photography classes during my B.F.A. and Masters of Art Education degrees at the University of Georgia. I studied photography in both Italy and France and enjoyed capturing the people, culture, and historic sights through my lens. Since then I have traveled to Africa, the Caribbean, and back to Europe for more photography fun.
The crafty side of me likes to sew. I learned to sew from my grandmother, a life-long quilter, and my mother. My grandmother passed away in 2007 and I feel like creating little art pillows is a small tribute to her, but it's in a way that is all my own.
I am currently an elementary art teacher and teach a variety of art mediums to my students, including photography, drawing, sewing, weaving, painting, clay, and sculpture. I think it is fun to teach young minds how to get creative with many different materials.
In 2007, I started Shutterstitch, L.L.C.. I love what I do and can’t wait to get in my studio every day and create.
Favorite materials to work with: hand dyed fabric (especially from West Africa), batiks, vintage photographs, quirky vintage fabric, maps, colorful thread, buttons, rubber stamps
